Understanding and Supporting Immigrant Youth

This online video program will help families of immigrant youth to prevent their young people from choosing gang or crime related activities.

For young people INTEGRATION into a new culture is complex. Many whose choices lead them to involvement in crime and gangs say that if they had a role model or a supportive adult within their family or community, they would not have turned to gangs for emotional support and crime for financial support. This course, written by a leading expert in the field and supported by “The Back Door”, a youth focused community project, takes a proactive approach to fostering understanding within families to help keep youth out of trouble.

Topics covered in this program:
- Adapting to Canadian customs
- Adjustment to the Canadian community
- Adjustment to the Canadian school system
- The influence of the media
- Dealing with adjustment or emotional problems

With greater supports around them, our youth will have less reason to engage in high-risk activities such as drug use, gang involvement and crime.

These supports are reinforced and integrated through public education and community involvement in the daily lives of new immigrant youth.
