Introduction to Privacy Law

Three laws have come into effect within the past year; the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, or PIPEDA, and the BC and Alberta Personal Information Protection Act, or PIPA (both Alberta and BC have enacted a PIPA). These laws are designed to protect personal information held by the private sector.

All organizations that collect, store, or use personal information are affected by these laws. It is essential that staff within your organization have the knowledge to comply with PIPEDA and PIPA. Particularly as the laws provide for fines of up to $100,000 as well as damages for privacy violations.

Do you know how your organization is affected by the Privacy Acts? Does your organization comply?
